The problem is that the obvious answers are used up

He has a wallet. He has a watch. Somebody gave him a leather travel organiser in 2023 and it is still in its box. The difficulty with buying a gift for a boyfriend is rarely a lack of options — it is that the standard options have all been given already.

What survives is the thing that quietly joins his week. Coffee he would not buy at that price. A candle that does not smell like a hotel bathroom. One good tool for something he already does.

Buy for the hobby he already has

Not the hobby you would like him to take up. If he makes coffee every morning, better coffee is a good gift and a pour-over kit he has no room for is not. If he reads, a book he has mentioned beats a subscription he has to remember to cancel.

The test is whether he would use it this month. Anything that needs a new habit to be useful is a gift to a version of him that does not exist yet.

Personalise the object, not the sentiment

Engraving works on men better than most people expect, as long as it is small and on something functional. A date inside a strap. Initials on the underside. The rule is that it should be visible to him and invisible to a stranger.

Where it goes wrong is a long message printed across the front of something he has to carry in public.

Occasions change the answer

A birthday can be playful. A first anniversary usually should not be — it is the one where something lasting is expected, and a joke gift reads as not having thought about it.

For an apology, keep it understated. A gift that arrives looking expensive reads as an attempt to buy your way out of the conversation rather than have it.

Common questions

What is a good gift for a boyfriend who says he wants nothing?
Buy a better version of something he already uses every day — his coffee, his tea, the candle in the room he works in. It sidesteps the question of whether he needs anything, because he was buying it anyway.
How much should I spend on a boyfriend gift?
₹1,000 to ₹3,000 covers most occasions and buys a hamper of two or three pieces that belong together. Spend more for a first anniversary or a milestone birthday, where something lasting is expected.
Is engraving a good idea for men?
Yes, when it is small and on something functional — a date inside a strap, initials on an underside. It should be visible to him and invisible to a stranger. Long messages across the front of a carried object rarely land.
